Measuring accurately is the key to achieving a perfect fit for your window treatments. Whether you’re looking for zebra shades, blinds, or other window coverings, precise measurements ensure functionality, aesthetics, and optimal light control. Here’s everything you need to know to measure for window treatments from Smart Decor Home Interiors.
Getting Started
Tips for Accurate Measurements:
• Use a steel tape measure for precise measurements. Avoid using fabric or flexible tapes.
• Decide on mount type: Choose between an inside mount or an outside mount. The mount type affects the measurements and the overall look.
• Measure width first, then height: Always measure width (left to right) before height (top to bottom).
• Record measurements to the nearest 1/8”: Make sure to label width and height clearly to avoid mixing them up.
Tools You’ll Need:
• Steel Measuring Tape
• Step Ladder
• Pencil and Paper
Step 1: Determine Mount Type – Inside or Outside
Inside Mount
• Description: The shade or blind will hang within the window frame.
• Benefits:
• Offers a clean, streamlined look.
• Enhances energy efficiency by creating a close fit.
• When to Use: Ideal when your window has sufficient depth for mounting and if the frame is square.
Outside Mount
• Description: The shade or blind overlaps the window frame, hanging outside the opening.
• Benefits:
• Reduces light gaps for better privacy and light control.
• Suitable for windows with minimal depth or frames that aren’t square.
• When to Use: Recommended for out-of-square windows or windows with obstructions in the frame.
Measuring for Zebra Shades (Dual Sheer Shades) and Blinds
Inside Mount
Width:
1. Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom of your window opening.
2. Record the smallest measurement to the closest 1/8”.
3. Measure at the depth within the frame where you’ll install your brackets to ensure a secure fit.
Height:
1. Measure the height at the left, middle, and right of the window opening.
2. Record the largest measurement to the nearest 1/8”.
Note: For inside mounts, manufacturers will apply a small deduction to ensure a proper fit within the frame.
Outside Mount
Width:
1. Measure the area you want to cover, including an overlap of at least 1 ½” on both sides.
2. Record this measurement.
Height:
1. Decide the top point where the shade will start, then measure from this point down to the window sill (or to your desired length if there’s no sill).
2. Record this measurement.
Note: For outside mounts, the factory will not take any deductions. The shade will be made to your exact measurements.
Measuring for Kitchen Cabinets and Wardrobes
When measuring for kitchen cabinets and wardrobes, accuracy is essential for a seamless fit and professional look.
Tips for Accurate Cabinet and Wardrobe Measurements
• Ensure the area is clear of obstructions that could impact measurements.
• Double-check measurements to ensure consistency, as small errors can affect installation.
• Label measurements clearly to avoid confusion between width, height, and depth.
Measuring for Cabinets
1. Width: Measure horizontally from edge to edge.
2. Height: Measure from the top to the bottom of the space.
3. Depth: Measure from the front to the back wall or desired endpoint.
Measuring for Wardrobes
1. Width: Measure the width of the entire space where the wardrobe will go.
2. Height: Measure from the floor to the ceiling.
3. Depth: Measure how far out you want the wardrobe to extend from the wall.
